Discussing Bankruptcy in Toronto on the CBC

Shortly after 9:00 am on Sunday morning I arrived at the CBC Toronto studios on Front Street to appear live on CBC News Sunday, a weekly two hour news and current affairs program. It’s broadcast on CBC Newsworld, and on CBC Toronto. I was asked, as a bankruptcy trustee, to comment on what it’s like to go bankrupt in Toronto.

I was joined in the studio by a man who filed bankruptcy four years ago (not with our firm; he used another trustee, and I had not met him before Sunday). He was also asked to comment on his experiences with bankruptcy. He said that it was a tremendous relief for him to finally deal with his debts.

In my experience, for most people bankruptcy is a relief. Most people spend many months, even years, trying to deal with their debts, and when they finally can’t deal with them any longer they call us and we explain their options and start the bankruptcy process. Most of the people who call us don’t end up going bankrupt, which is why we explain all options before allowing you to decide which option is right for you.

As an increasing number of Canadians file personal bankruptcy in Canada, it is critical that you understand what is involved in the process, and that’s why I’m happy to appear in the media to explain the process.

You can watch the entire segment about bankruptcy on the CBC web site.

If you want a personal review of your situation, please call our office at 310-PLAN (that’s 310-7526, no area code required), or e-mail us, and our staff will arrange a no charge initial consultation so we can review your options and allow you to decide how to deal with your debts.
